Christie Display Technology Opens and Closes Major Sporting Event in Myanmar
Posted on Friday, December 20, 2013
NAYPYIDAW, Myanmar – (December 20, 2013)– Christie® uses its technology to assist its China-based partner, Xinguang, a company specializing in lighting and visual technical support, in the visual technology management of the recent major sporting event opening and closing ceremonies in Naypyidaw, Myanmar. The games take place December 11-22 and feature 40 Christie Roadster S+22K-J 3-chip DLP® projectors installed on five towers along the stadium’s roof and projecting onto a 72-meter by 56-meter visual stage on the stadium floor. The projectors will also be used at the upcoming Para Games.

“We have a strong working relationship with Christie built on mutual goals, respect and dedication to delivering the best visual experience possible,” said Xinguang’s president, Li Zheqing. “Our work with Christie began in 2008 with a monumental sporting event held in Beijing, and our working relationship has grown throughout the years.”

“We have full confidence in the Christie projectors as they’re trial-tested and consistently deliver excellent quality and superior performance. Christie also provides top-notch after-sales service and technical support which sets them apart from the crowd,” commented Li Yong, technical director for the Games.

As Wunna Theikdi Stadium is an open-air venue, the tropical weather of Myanmar – regular thunderstorms and long hours of intense sun – is a factor, and protecting the projectors is a necessity. To address this, each tower housing the Christie Roadsters is adorned with protective covers and a lightning rod.

An additional challenge presented by the venue is its relatively short height – just 32 meters – from the ground to the Stadium’s roof. This creates a smaller and more limited angle for floor projection. Given this, the towers holding the Christie S+22K-J projectors required roof mounting to fully utilise the capabilities of the Roadsters.

Christie Technology Meets High Expectations
To foster a stronger cooperation and exchange with Myanmar, China is providing the technical assistance in athlete training, game management system, training and competition equipment, and opening and closing ceremonies, to help make this event a successful one.

For the opening and closing ceremonies, China supported specifically in helping Myanmar to finish the ceremony design, provided or leased equipment in lighting and sound, stage equipment, fireworks and wire. Having Christie solutions as an integral part of delivering that experience was part of the success for the opening night.

“The Games represent the best in athletics, competition and friendship. This high level of performance on the field of play calls for the same superior standard in visitor experience for the Games’ spectators,” said Yuan Zheng, chief commander for the technical assistance representing China. “With its experience in hosting such large scale events, China is happy to be able to bring our expertise and share this knowledge with Myanmar as a gesture of friendship to make this a special event for all.”

“This year’s Games are a very important event for Myanmar, the region and the sporting world. For the first time in 44 years, Myanmar is now ready and we’re able to host this sporting event again,” said Sin Yaw Mg Mg, SEA Games opening and closing ceremonies Show Director representing Myanmar. “Given the uniqueness of these Games, we wanted to use the most sophisticated technology to create a memorable atmosphere and experience for the world to understand more about Myanmar including our history and culture. With the projection achieved by the 40 Christie projectors, the 2013 Games’ opening ceremonies delivered an enticing visual experience on every level – and the closing ceremonies will be equally exciting and captivating.”

“The exacting specifications required to meet the high visual standards required for this sporting event call for need for the best technologies available,” added Hu Juying, 2013 SEA Games opening and closing ceremonies art director representing China. “We worked very closely with the Director Mg Mg using technology to realize his artistic goal in representing Myanmar. A specific example would be the unforgettable visual experience through the use of floor projection during the “Our Future Earth” segment. The projectors displayed stunning visuals tell the story of nature, destruction resulted by climate changes and the vision of how people overcome catastrophes to rebuild their homes with courage and a sense of environmental awareness.”

“Being an important part of an event as prestigious as this sporting event is a quite an honor and privilege for Christie,” commented Lin Yu, vice president, Christie Asia Pacific. “We’re proud to have our projectors used to visually illuminate the Games and provide those watching a visual spectacle. We’re also pleased to work with our partner, Xinguang, to ensure the best visual experience possible is delivered.”
