"The new distributed system, with a single CAL 64 firing downward from the top of each spectator tribune, not only offers better coverage and greatly improved intelligibility, but has also practically eliminated any unwanted echoes."

Technical Manager, Al Tamyoz Business Group

A new steerable Meyer Sound CAL column array loudspeaker system has markedly improved speech and music clarity for fans at the central court of theKhalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex in Doha, Qatar. Completed just in time for the Qatar ExxonMobil Open, the system was installed and commissioned by Doha-based Al Tamyoz Business Group.

"The new distributed system, with a single CAL 64 firing downward from the top of each spectator tribune, not only offers better coverage and greatly improved intelligibility, but has also practically eliminated any unwanted echoes," says Vijay Kumar, technical manager for Al Tamyoz, the project's system integrator.

Mounted on flagpoles and tilted downward at a 15-degree angle, the three slender CAL 64 loudspeakers blend discreetly into the contemporary, angular architecture of the outdoor stadium. To keep the sound focused on the audience, each CAL loudspeaker is set up to tailor down-tilt and vertical beam spread, aiming specifically at seating areas and avoiding reflective surfaces.

To supplement coverage in the stadium's far corners and VIP boxes, the system incorporates 16 UPM-1XP and 7 UP-4XP 48 V loudspeakers. A Galileo loudspeaker management system with a Galileo 616 processor provides system drive and alignment.

The complete system renovation also includes a Yamaha 01V96 digital mixing console and a Sennheiser ew 300 G2 wireless monitoring system.

The Khalifa Tennis Stadium installation was the first Meyer Sound project for Al Tamyoz. "The professionalism and mutual support demonstrated by both companies surely will open the doors to many new opportunities in the future," says Soy Philip, general manager of Al Tamyoz.

Owned and operated by the Qatar Tennis Federation, the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex was inaugurated in 1992 by Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Emir of Qatar. The stadium was renovated and enlarged in 2008 from a capacity of 4,500 to 7,000.
